“Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them” Movie Review

Hello all,

How are you all doing? I was originally going to post my review on the recently completed kdrama “The K2”, but today I unexpectedly got invited to go see the movie, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” in 3-D!! If anyone doesn’t know, this movie is based off of a book which I guess you could call a Harry Potter franchise. So if any of you are Harry Potter fans, stick around!! (If you’re not, it’s ok too ^^).

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” was just released today (Nov. 18) and I’m so grateful my friend invited me <33. So the plot found online is different and more vague from what I’m going to write here since this is going to be the plot I got out of the movie.

Plot: Newt Scamander arrives in New York (he’s British). He is a writer who documents magical creatures he finds and he carries around a suitcase where all his creatures take refuge. The trouble begins when some of his creatures escape the suitcase and when he accidentally switches suitcases with a No-maj (American term for Muggle) named Jacob. Jacob witnesses Newt’s magic and helps him find the creatures that have escaped. However, during their hunt, they find a darker magic called “obscurus” that can kill anyone.

THOUGHTS: Well, let’s start off with the obvious… WOW dat title is sooo long to type and say haha! Like most Harry Potter movies, this was 2 hrs. and 13 mins. This is one of the first J.K. Rowling movies that deal with adults rather than with teens like in Harry Potter so it was refreshing to see different types of people deal with similar problems. I can tell this probably will not be a long series like Harry Potter the way the movie played out. There was a clear distinction between the protagonists and antagonists. The movie was not bad nor was the plot. It was pretty funny and cute at the beginning of the movie when one of his creatures escaped. I did like the characters and their roles. You know how sometimes there’s just this one annoying good character that somehow gets on your nerves? Well, in this movie I didn’t find any I particularly disliked. Some people did die and I guess you do need a death in these movies to motive action. The magic was cool and the creatures were so creative. Acting was also so great, props to Eddie Redmayne ^^. Tbh, there wasn’t a lot I didn’t like nor really enjoyed. I would describe this to be a unique film that left a “magical” feeling afterwards so I think it wouldn’t be the types of films you easily forget afterwards. It had a distinct beginning, middle, and end and had mostly all of the elements found in the Harry Potter movies. I do have to say though, this was not as dramatic as Harry Potter and a lot more short and to the point. The ending had a sense of finality (maybe too much that made me think there’ll only be 1 movie, but you never know~).

-So overall it was not bad. I did like it and do not regret anything. As I mentioned before, my friend invited me to go watch it with her and it was in 3-D so a lot of things popped out more. Are any of you planning on watching it? Leave a comment below, like, and follow!! Thanks for reading!

  1. I just watched this last Saturday. Although it wasn’t as amazing compared to the main HP films, I find it enjoyable. I laughed the loudest in the theatre, and it seemed that the other moviegoers take my cue to laugh with me. Ahaha! Anyway, I was so surprised about Johnny Depp’s appearance. It’s more adult-ish compared to the HP films, but it’s ok, I guess.
